FPOP will provide condoms, injectables, tubal ligation, vasectomy, IUDs and/or pills to 40,000 poorest couples throughout their reproductive lifetime.
In the Philippines, substantial societal changes have improved women’s lives and influenced their family size goals. Fertility has fallen considerably and women wanted fewer children. Even with this development, however, almost half of recent births remain unplanned at all or at a particular time. At the national level, this situation has not improved over the last decade. In some regions, unplanned childbearing has even increased.
Nonuse of contraception and increasing use of traditional methods contribute to the high level of unplanned pregnancies. Half of married women do not want a child soon or want no more children, but are not using a modern contraceptive.
An estimated 500,000 women from all regions and backgrounds have illegal abortions each year. Approximately 100,000 of them are hospitalized for related complications.
Poor access to modern contraceptives is a major obstacle to wider use. Increased support and resources are needed to improve access, particularly by those from the poor, marginalized, socially excluded and underserved groups, to family planning services.
