For more than 20 years now, countries all over the world have been facing the AIDS epidemic, most of the time, on their own. Studies were made and best practices were documented to help countries deal with their specific epidemics. But as the world increasingly globalizes and country borders become more permeable, the need to address mobility and migration becomes very important. With increased mobility within and across national borders, countries can no longer afford to work alone in response to the threat of HIV and AIDS. Regional and international cooperation is needed to address HIV transmission among migrant populations and strong networks are necessary to halt the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
The International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), which is on its 9th year, brings together people of various backgrounds from the region to share knowledge, skills, ideas and research findings on HIV and AIDS. It is also an opportunity for people to provide mutual support and express stronger commitments on the fight against HIV and AIDS.
The 9th ICAAP will take place on August 9-13, 2009 at the Bali International Convention Center, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia. With the theme, “Empowering People, Strengthening Networks,” the conference aims to address issues of mobility and migration in order to empower people – those vulnerable to and living with HIV and AIDS, and strengthen networks – the People Living with HIV (PLHIV) groups, faith-based groups, communities, governments, sectors and regions.
The conference will feature, apart from the regular track and plenary sessions, skills building workshop, community forum, satellite meeting and exhibits.
Three staff members of the National Office will represent FPOP in this conference.
