The Family Planning Organization of the Philippines recently conducted a two-day joint training of its Chapter Program Managers and National Youth Leaders. It was held from May 19 to 20, 2010 as part of a series of organizational development activities aimed at increasing the capacity of FPOP to deliver effective, efficient, and sensitive SRH information and services.
The first day dealt with thematic issues of sexuality and reproductive health, abortion, HIV and AIDS, and ensuring the implementation of SRH in difficult settings (e.g., disasters). The second day was dedicated to building the skills of the participants in relation to resource mobilization and policy analysis.
Ms. Teresita Elegado, Program Coordinator of FPOP, started the day by taking the participants to a trip down memory lane with her presentation Revisiting the Past: From FP to SRHR. Ms. Lady Lisondra of the FPOP Youth Desk took the baton from Ms. Elegado with her video clip of and discussion on SRHR Situationer. After the break, Mr. Brayant Gonzales echoed the IPPF Declaration on Sexual Rights followed by a discussion on Sexual Health, Gender, and Society, again by Ms. Elegado.
Two workshops were conducted in the afternoon. One was on abortion, which brought to the surface the participants’ personal biases on the issue and the individuals depicted in each case. This workshop was also undertaken to initiate discussion on the issue in the face of the growing number of unsafe abortion practices in the country.
The next workshop was on HIV and AIDS, aimed to enlighten the participants on the speed of the transmission of the virus. The workshop was also designed to encourage the participant to empathize with people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHA) as their understanding their situation will have an impact on how they provide service to PLHAs.
The day was capped with Dr. Sean Francis Lezada’s discussion on the Minimum Initial Service Package for RH where he shared FPOP’s relief efforts during Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng and how the other chapters could assemble their own MISP kits if they are faced with the same crisis situations.
Day Two was opened by Mr. Gessen Rocas, Head of Program Operations Group, with a review of the elements of Resource Mobilization wherein he also discussed how to draft a project proposal. After the break, Mr. Felix Tanedo, FPOP consultant, shared to the participants the results of the feasibility study he conducted with the four (4) chapters of FPOP. He topped his presentation with a lecture on Business Planning.
Mr. Xerxes Arcenal, Knowledge Management Specialist, shared the Fund Raisers’ Toolkit (FRT) and he provided the participants a walkthrough on how to construct their own web pages in order to maximize the benefits that can be derived from FRT.
During the afternoon session FPOP Executive Director Mr. Roberto Ador facilitated two workshops—the Prisoner’s Dilemma and War Games that placed the participants in real life situation of policy analysis and policy advocacy.
