FPOP Leadership: Setting Standards to Keep Up with the Times

National Council Meeting 2010The third week of May 2010 saw the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines, Inc. (FPOP) conclude a series of organizational development activities aimed at increasing its own capacity to deliver sensitive, timely, and high-quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services to the poor, marginalized, socially-excluded and underserved sectors of the population.

National Council Meeting

More than thirty (30) resolutions and policies were discussed and approved during the 2010 National Council (NC) meeting.  The policies recommended and tackled range from purely aesthetic revisions of existing policies to defining the organizations client base, to a deeper look at the organization’s own understanding of SRH issues like abortion and sexuality education among the youth.  Among the significant policy recommendations that were approved are the following:

  1. Defining “poor, marginalized, socially excluded and underserved” or PMSEU, FPOP’s target groups.
  2. Providing emergency contraceptive pills to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
  3. Adoption of World Health Organization (WHO) standards and definition of pregnancy and abortion.
  4. Adoption of Department of Health (DOH) Guidelines on the Prevention and Management of Abortion and its Complications (PMAC).
  5. Establishing the Philippine Network of Youth Advocates (PNOY Advocates).
  6. Setting up of Planned Parenthood Trading and Marketing Corporation (PPTMC) and Planned Parenthood Training and Consultancy Center (PPTCC).

The NC meeting was attended by close over 60 volunteers, including young people, representing the twenty five (25) chapters of FPOP across the country.  The meeting was held from 22-23 May 2010.

The annual General Membership Meeting followed immediately after the NC meeting.  Having exhaustively discussed the policy recommendations during the preceding meeting, the General Membership Assembly approved all the proposed policies forwarded by the National Council.
